22) Bleeding Cessna Skymaster Brakes

You didn’t come this far to stop

Sometimes it is difficult to get the brakes to work properly. Air in the system is usually the problem, therefore “bleeding” needs to be accomplished. It’s a 2 person job and patience is required. Need; a ¼” box wrench ground flat to about 1/8” thickness, an old style oil hand pump or plastic bottle, 2 ft. of 3/16” ID plastic hose, and hydraulic fluid (Mil 5606). First remove the little plastic plug at the top of the brake master cylinder inside the cabin, place rags or paper towels above and around the master cylinder. Be sure to replace the plastic plug in the master cylinder when finished.

Step 1. Connect the hose to the pump can full of hydraulic fluid.

Step 2. Place the box wrench over the bleeder fitting first, then push the end of the hose over the bleeder fitting nipple at the bottom of the brake caliper. Make sure hydraulic fluid is all the way up the hose to the nipple, to not introduce any more air into the system.

Step 3. Have one person hold the hose tight against the nipple, then open the bleeder with the wrench approximately ¼ turn. The second person then continuously pumps the can of hydraulic fluid. Don’t stop pumping until bleeder is closed. Close the bleeder once air bubbles are seen in the hose.

Step 4. Go to the brake pedals and pump/push/wiggle them a dozen times to try to get any air pockets out.

Step 5. Repeat Steps 1. thru 4. A dozen times or until there is adequate brakes, then repeat on the other brake.
